The challenges of the 50th CFM

In this fiftieth anniversary year of Cameroon’s membership of the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) since June 1974, Cameroon has the honour of hosting the 50th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM). This event will take place from 29 to 30 August 2024 at the Yaounde Conference Center (Cameroon). In this respect and at the political level, the Yaounde meeting will be an opportunity to : magnify the excellent cooperation relations between Cameroon and the OIC ; promote Cameroon’s brand image as a “land of opportunity and hospitality”; reaffirm the ideal of “a Cameroon united in its cultural diversity”, where animists, Christians and Muslims live together in peace and harmony; to ensure Cameroon’s diplomatic influence by strengthening its positioning, image and credibility as a privileged place to host strategic and high-level international meetings; to strengthen Cameroon-OIC cooperation ;to raise national public awareness of the OIC ecosystem, in order to capitalise optimally on opportunities for cooperation and partnerships with the Islamic Ummah.

YAOUNDE,
HEADQUARTERS OF POLITICAL INSTITUTIONS

Cameroon will host the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), from August 29 to 30, 2024. The event will take place at the convention centers in the city of Yaoundé, the political capital of the Cameroon. Indeed, Yaoundé is often called “Ongola” in the “EKANG” language, the language of the indigenous ethnic group called “Béti”. The name “Ongola” in French means the “city of seven hills/mountains”. Populated by 2,765,000 inhabitants in 2015, it is, with Douala, the most populous city in this state and in the CEMAC zone. It is an urban community made up of seven district municipalities. It is the capital of the Center region and the Mfoundi department (the administrative boundaries merging with those of the department). The city of Yaoundé is home to the headquarters of Cameroonian institutions and administrations. The different districts are ordered according to the rugged terrain of the city site. Roads and buildings develop mainly on the heights of the different hills. The marshy lowlands often give way to subsistence agriculture, vegetation and numerous small watercourses. Some of them are the Mfoundi, Ékozoa, Biyeme and Mefou rivers. Near the administrative center of Yaoundé there is a lake called “Lac municipal de Yaoundé”, created in 1951-1952.
